The Acentos Crew: (from, l to r) Oscar Bermeo, Rich Villar, Fish Vargas and Jessica Torres with Martín Espada

ACENTOS BRONX POETRY SHOWCASE
"Acentos is one of the best audiences, one of the best venues, I've ever seen. The organizers do a great job, not only in terms of spreading the word, but also in terms of creating anticipation. I feel like I'm part of a community, part of a movement. Aquí estamos y no nos vamos." • Martín Espada

The debate may rage forever as to who or what constitutes Latino poetry. Here, there is no such identity crisis. We are already here, writing the histories of our neighborhoods, following the traditions of our ancestors, as well as the poetic traditions that came before us. To paraphrase Baldwin, the poet's task as historian is to keep the story new, even when the telling is costly. This is the aesthetic we foster at Acentos. It is always about the word, the work, and it all begins here.

Poetry, we believe, provides the most honest witness to our world, and it is among the oldest art forms on earth. Each poet is a breathing history, and we invite each poet to ring out in his or her own distinctive voice. Acentos celebrates a diversity of voices, comunidad both on the open mic and within the universe of Latino and Latina poets on our feature stage.

Acentos Bronx Poetry Showcase is committed to maintaining a safe open space for the expression and enjoyment of poetry, no matter what the language, without translation or apology. Each reading is a celebration of our work as colleagues, friends, and family. We are proudly based in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, New York, at the Bruckner Bar and Grill (Corner of Third Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard), in its new and exciting lounge and arts space: The Bruckner Gallery.

Acentos showcases nationally recognized Latino and Latina poets alongside emerging voices every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, in a setting designed to cultivate a community of writers and audience around poetry. We broadcast Acentos Live, a regular podcast featuring news, interviews, and poetry live from our home in the South Bronx; and we publish ACENTOS REVIEW, an online journal highlighting literature by writers of Latino/a descent.

"Acentos is by far the most authentically welcoming poetry venue I have been to in decades. On my visit there, time limits were respected at open mic and audience and poets were welcomed with generous hearts by MC Oscar Bermeo and his colleagues. Professionalism is taken seriously and I suspect that machismo, misogyny and homophobia would not be tolerated or applauded. Acentos is not just another poet's venue, it is a breathing time capsule, honoring and capturing history, seeking substance and holding a vision for the future. I encourage you to keep on raising the standards; there's enough dilettantism on the poetry scene, bring on the craft!" • Magdalena Gómez
"Acentos always has a headliner but the meat of the evening was the open-mic session, where more than a score of poets read and performed before a friendly, encouraging crowd."
• New York Times (Arts section, January 30, 2004)

Si Se SUNY!

This has been our rallying cry for our friend and fellow CaBronxite
Urayoan Noel since we found out he got the job as assistant professor
of English at SUNY-Albany. Well, folks, it is now August and our
homeslice is off to the land of well-fed politicos and budget
shortfalls...not that much different from NYC, actually! But, he
will be further away and not so accessible for the tomfoolery and
jackassery we've come to love from him at Acentos.

The official Bronx send-off for Ura is this coming Tuesday, August
12th, at the Bruckner Gallery @ Bruckner Bar and Grill. You can
expect more of the same camaraderie and familia that you know and
love us for, but it'll be that much more palpable since our boy is
off to teach the babies! And who knows, there may be a Spanic Attack
or two in the offing, not to mention some books by Ura...

Vaya gente! Come on through and hear some poetry, fiesta, and what's
in the pipeline from Acentos this fall.

Paz,
Rich Villar
