The Pinion Reading Series features exceptional poets whose work lifts us and moves us forward. Each poet featured in Pinion invite a selection of guest readers whose work they have mentored or through whose work and teaching they have been influenced. The intention is to present the creative machine and the poetic discourse in the context of one poet's sphere of influence and inspiration. It is a unique opportunity for our audiences to hear the intertextual resonance of one poet's work or to trace the lines of style and voice from poet to poet over the course of the reading.

Pinion has a two-fold meaning. In its oldest origins it is the wing feather giving the bird its lift and propulsion, and in industrial times it is the small cog, wheel or wire which engages the whole and propels the machine. Language is the gear of society and poetry is its most necessary pinion. Language carries the body of thought which seeks to elevate mankind and poetry is its wing.

The very first Pinion reading featured Mark Doty in the company of Tina Chang, Kathy Graber, Brenda Shaughnessy and Joel Whitney. The second featured Barbara Jane Reyes with her guests Jessica Hagedorn, Bino A. Realuyo and Anthem Salgado. Other Pinion features have included Martin Espada and Yusef Komunyakaa.
