Spend 1 - 2 hours working with a blank canvas (or paper) and color (crayons, ketchup/mustard/seasonings, paint, pen (ink), pastels, make up and nail polish, etc). Work past the initial 15 minute "this is fun, this is weird, this is yucky" phase.  Whatever emerges from you, emerges.

The next day, write a poem, not telling about the process, but rather showing the work. Capture the rhythms, shapes, relationship of the strokes, the way the colors meet, the energy, the textures, shapes, images that emerge...and anything else that the piece suggests to you. Go back to words that emerge from this exercise...they may be the spine of your next piece.
