I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear...
The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of
the girl sewing or washing,
Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day--at night the party of young fellows,
robust, friendly,
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.
I Hear America Singing, Walt Whitman
The open mic is at the very core of what we believe it takes to develop a viable, constructive community centered around poetry. Not the finger-snapping, all-love vibe of many open mics and several terrible movies, but a challenging and supportive space that is open to all styles and voices. It's the reason the list is never as short as perhaps it should be because we hate to turn anyone away from the opportunity to share his or her work. It is where we develop our craft, listen and learn from each other and, perhaps, hopefully, get exposed to something a little different from what we're used to that changes our thinking just a bit.
The louderJAM series is an extension of this, the space where "newer" poets mix with the more established mix with singer/songwriters, all stretching their poetic legs. It's an opportunity, sometimes the first, for a poet or singer to explore themes within their newer work, how it flows, audience interaction and a host of other things so important to the development of one's craft.
