Bear Pond Trail

Running to the top of Bear Pond
a trail of slippery red leaves
Fresh deer droppings and
the osprey's nest
-a surrendered sentential of late autumn-
are the only signs of animals
but the forest teeming with life
is practically screaming.

I am 8 miles in
with light joyous movement
Tackle the last climb
thinking about the city
and the subway steps I despise.
It's not the effort-- it's the footing.
The short, dirty concrete steps
the echo of feet behind you.
You can never just stop.
You would never want to just stop
and look around
for life
outside you.
